Many people do love tanning for its social attachment and to some extent become a modern trend. Even as you’re reading this, the idea of going for a tanning session is fast gaining wider interest and appeals across the divide. And there are many reasons that people find it very enjoyable. The cosmetic appeals apart, the therapeutic benefits are also drawing many people to tanning like ants to honey.
It is recorded that the Europeans started indoor tanning with sunlamps. Actually, the practice of being exposed to ultraviolet light to derive healing or therapeutic benefits spread Europe in the 1970s, particularly in sun-deprived countries. Of course, this was done long before indoor tanning facility was established in the United Sates in the late 1970s.
Indoor tanning has become a multi billion dollars industry!
However, since that period the US indoor tanning industry has been professionalized with substantial growth for the past 30 years. Industry and financial experts posited that the professional tanning industry has grown into a $5 billion industry parading over 28 million Americans tanning indoors yearly at about 25,000 tanning salons nationwide.
In most tanning salons, the most popular device being used is a clamshell-like tanning bed. The customer has to lie down on a Plexiglas surface so that lights from above and below reach his body. Though tanning is supposed to provide ‘natural’ healing, notwithstanding, it is alleged that indoor tanning has safety risks.
Anyway, despite this, many people - young women in particular - still patronize tanning salons. You see, the advancement of photo aging and skin cancer will take years to become evident in these young tanners, while the perceived high social value of a tan is immediately apparent.
How does tanning occur?
Tanning occurs when your skin produces additional pigment (or coloring) to protect itself against ultraviolet rays. But over-exposure to these ultraviolet are capable of causing injury to your eyes. It can also induce skin rashes, cause premature wrinkling of the skin and can increase the chances of developing skin cancer. In fact, the indoor-tanning industry has admitted that ultraviolet radiation is capable of causing skin cancer provided that it produces an actual burn.
However, the industry spokespeople argued that the pattern of sun exposure that causes skin cancer particularly melanoma and basal cell carcinoma are not constant with indoor tanning business. For any given amount of ultraviolet light, they posited that there is a difference between energy being received in many little measures that lead to a tan against a few big measures that produce a burn.
Do you also love indoor tanning? Then you must protect yourself from potential risks of skin cancer.
Now, take note of the following precautions:
Avoid sunburn by limiting your exposure. Insist for information and more assistance concerning ultraviolet limits for your age and skin type.
Protect your eyes with fitting goggles. Not just any kind of goggle please, but ensure it FIT snugly and ensure that the tanning salon sterilizes the goggles so as prevent the spread of eye infections.
Your medical history should be considered. Don’t go near tanning devices when you’re going through medication for diabetes or lupus. And also do let the salon know ahead if you’re taking tranquilizers, birth control pills and antihistamines.
My final note to you
It is also proven that the skin cannot be considered completely healthy without very regular care that also (combine) to wage war against acne and any skin disorder by using acne treatment skin care or herbal acne remedy to clear acne.
